The Wexner Score (Cleveland Clinic Florida Incontinence Score) is the most widely used tool for assessing the severity of fecal incontinence. The questionnaire was published by Jorge and Wexner in 1993 and is considered the international standard. Particularly useful for patients who have had low anterior resection for rectal cancer.

  • Rarely (less than once a month) = 1 point
  • Sometimes (less than once a week, but at least once a month) = 2 points
  • Usually (less than once a day, but at least once a week) = 3 points
  • Always (at least once a day) = 4 points

For LARS syndrome

If you had a low anterior resection for rectal cancer, the LARS score is more specific to combined bowel dysfunction (urgency + frequency + incontinence).
